The Goole Vikings were blooded on Saturday at their first ever game, against Premiership giants East Hull, this carefully chosen match was to give the Vikings the full game day experience against a team which has been established for many years and used to playing rugby league at the highest level, and it did not fail to deliver.

The game was played over four twenty minutes quarters ensuring the whole Viking squad got a good run out. As a team that had only been established since October 2018 and never played a competitive game as a team, no one knew what to expect and in all honesty expectations were not high, however the Vikings surprised everyone making East Hull work extremely hard for each point they scored and Vikings Captain Josh Hardy made history by going over the line to be the first ever try scorer for Goole.

Even with a mounting score deficit and with growing minor injuries, Goole’s heads never went down, in all honestly the 44 - 4 final score was not really a true reflection of the game, Goole did themselves and the people of Goole proud and have proved they will be in the future a team to be reckoned with once pitted against teams in the same league.

Goole’s man of the Match was Brad McLoughlin who’s darting runs exposed weakness in the Hull defence regularly but it was a hard decision as every man to a number gave their all and earned the right to pull on the red and black jersey.

Goole Vikings travel to New Earswick on Saturday to play the New Earswick All Blacks in the second of their pre season warm up games, kick off is at 2pm.

The Vikings have been very lucky this week to secure some great sponsorship deals, our match balls for the season have been kindly sponsored by Super League supplier STEEDEN SPORTS, we have a brand new set of rugby goalposts been delivered shortly courtesy of  the leading supplier of sports goal posts HARROD  SPORTS.   John Robinson of Harrod  sent the following message:

‘’Harrod Sport have had an affinity with Grassroots Sports in the UK for over 60 years. After reading about the history of Goole Vikings ARLFC, it was such a 'good news' story, so we're proud to be donating a set of goal posts for their new season in the Yorkshire League. Good luck for the season!’’

Finally our training kit is to be supplied by a local firm which is destined to be a major force in sporting clothing in the very near future its founder and sole owner Kris Finney said the following:

"FIITSTYLE is excited to collaborate with Goole Vikings ARLFC.

It’s an exciting partnership, both ambitious and passionate to develop and create amazing opportunities for players and community."

We have also been sponsored by one of our own Matt Chesterman who has had his late Grandfather,  Robert Chesterman's name placed on the playing jerseys, Mr Chesterman was a great inspiration to Matt, lets hope we can  do Matt's Grandad proud !

The Vikings are certainly gaining some great support for the upcoming season from some truly great companies and individuals and it will only get better as long as we keep doing what we are doing.

Up the Vikings !

Finally your weekly bit of history this time the Challenge Cup 1936/37

Goole had reached the first round proper by beating Glasson Rangers, in Maryport, in the final qualifying round. The coach journey to Cumbria took Goole six hours and they only arrived in Maryport forty five minutes before kick-off. A remarkable attendance of 3,700 watched the game but because of the chronic unemployment in the town most of the crowd was allowed in free and the receipts were only £32. The first round game against Broughton Rangers was staged on the Goole home ground The Victoria Pleasure Gardens. Broughton made a number of offers to Goole to switch the game but they were refused. An admission price of 1s was agreed with 2/6 being the cost of a seat in the stand. 2,000 people saw a game in which Goole, members of the Castleford and Doncaster League, matched their illustrious senior opponents. With the score at 6 points to 0 at half time Goole saw they had an opportunity to win the game and so after the interval put Broughton under tremendous pressure. The Manchester club just managed to hold out and sealed the game in the last eight minutes with two tries and a conversion.

Above is a picture of the team actually taken at the VPG !

if anyone knows anyone on the picture or is a relative or knows a relative please let us know so we can get in touch with them. Got to say the crows look like the cast of Peaky Blinders lol.

Anyway guys we are getting there.......... COYV !
